About the Course

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition that affects verbal and nonverbal communication, social skills, and behaviour. This course will enable participants to obtain detailed information on ASD. Participants will learn how to understand and interact with individuals with this condition. It should appeal to parents, educators, and other professionals and employers who would like to better their knowledge on ASD.

Learning Outcomes
• To obtain a general view of ASD. To understand the why’s and how’s of ASD.
• To examine the communication style of individuals with ASD.
• To learn how to manage different and challenging behaviours.
• To be around to help individuals with ASD to understand the social world and to be able to interact in it.
• To learn how to produce and use a variety of aids that will help individuals with ASD.
• How to work with individuals with ASD in the school and work environment to enable the individuals with ASD to perform to the best of their ability.

Delivery Style: The course will be delivered through a series of lectures with opportunities for discussion

Course Trainers

Ms Kristina Uhlmann (Agius), B.Sc. (hons), M.ED. Autism (Birm) is a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) specialised in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Before retiring in 2020, she was Assistant Lecturer in the Communication Therapy Department, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Malta. Kristina also worked as a Specialist SLP in ASD in the Speech-Language Department, Malta, and had a work placement at the Speech and Language Therapy Department, Yorkhill Division, NHS Greater Glasgow. Kristina has experience working with children and adults with ASD and presenting workshops
Ms Kirsten Galea Pulis, B.Sc. (Hons), M.A. Autism (Wales) is a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) with a special interest in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). For 12 years, she worked with the Speech-Language Department (Ministry of Health), where she also led the Autism Special Interest Group, up until 2020, before entering private practice on a full-time basis. Kirsten is also a visiting lecturer with the Department of Human Communication Sciences and Disorders, within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Malta, lecturing on Pragmatics and Autism. She has experience working with children and adults with ASD and presenting workshops to parents and educators on different subjects in relation to ASD.
