About the Course

The aim of this course is to equip participants with better knowledge and understanding about the diabetic foot and its related complications. Screening methods to help with the early identification of common foot pathologies in this specific patient population will be discussed and how normal and abnormal biomechanics can impact foot structure and function in diabetes. Wound care management is also discussed during the sessions.  Educational and preventive measures including appropriate footcare, the basic principles of offloading and advice on therapeutic footwear for this specific population will also be addressed.

Course Trainers

Prof Cynthia Formosa qualified as a State Registered Podiatrist from the Dept of Health, Malta in February 1989. Prof Formosa is currently working on full -time basis with the University of Malta as an Associate Professor inside the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Prof Alfred Gatt qualified as a podiatrist in 1986. In 1999 he was founder President of the Association of Podiatrists of Malta. He is presently chairperson of the Diabetes Foot Research Group, which he has helped to launch in 2011.
Dr Stephen Mizzi qualified as a state Registered Podiatrist from the University of Malta in 1998. He recently became a certified thermographer in order to assist in the research related to the use of thermography in the diabetic foot as part of the Diabetic Foot Research Group (DFRG).
